Create new variants
Create new variants in bulk in two ways:
Add values to an existing option
Section titled “Add values to an existing option”Products have Size with S and M, and you want to add L and XL.
- Select the products
- Configure Bulk Edit, choose Create new variants
- Pick the option (like Size) and type the new values, comma separated:
L, XL - Preview, then Apply
Each product receives only the values it is missing. Products that already have a value keep it; nothing is duplicated. This means you can safely run the same job over a mixed catalog, or re-run it later to finish a collection.
Create a whole new option
Section titled “Create a whole new option”Products only have Size, and you want to add a Color or Finish option.
- Select the products
- Choose Create new variants, then Create a new option
- Type the option name and its values, for example
Finish: Textured, Smooth - Preview, then Apply
What happens to existing variants: they receive the first value you listed (Shopify requires every variant to have a value for every option). Each additional value creates a new variant per existing combination. A product with 5 sizes gains 5 new variants when you add a second value.
Safety defaults for new variants
Section titled “Safety defaults for new variants”- Price is copied from the product’s existing variants
- Inventory starts at 0, so nothing can be sold before you stock it
- SKU is left blank, so no duplicate SKUs are created
- Gift card products are skipped automatically
- Shopify allows at most 3 options per product; products already at 3 are skipped and reported
After the job: set stock
Section titled “After the job: set stock”When a create job finishes, the app offers to set a starting quantity on all the new variants at once: type a quantity, pick a location, one click. See Set stock on new variants.
